BIG
SUCCESS OF THE DUNA OF BOOKS
The
bathing stations on the Ravenna Riviera are not only a synonym of
sand, sun and bathing. Moreover they have represented for years
the main place for summer living and socialization for the inhabitants
of the city, hinterland and other cities further away such as Bologna.
The specificities of a place like Marina di Ravenna are having a
very wide beach framed by the sea and the green pine-wood and remaining
animated even in the evening, not only in the actual resort town
but also - and especially - in the bathing stations.
Enjoying beach life at any hour: this was the big bet, won hands
down by Marina.
A bathing station such as La Duna degli Orsi was and
is the protagonist for this bet and victory. The first inventor
of a phenomenon of social custom such as the happy hours, it moreover
strived to offer its guests a rich and varied package which includes
theme parties, a restaurant service, gymnastics with instructors,
etc.
In the summer of 2001, an initiative baring the name The Duna
of books was definitely the main attraction.
Under the guidance of Eraldo Baldina, a writer from Ravenna with
the collaboration of his colleague Carlo Lucarelli, as well as with
the active attention of the Councillors Office of Tourism
guided by Elio Gasperoni, a programme was set up which, in the space
of two months, brought some of the most important Italian writers
in front of a very numerous audience on a weekly basis. These writers
presented their books and conversed with the persons present in
the captivating atmosphere of the beach in the evening.
It all happened in an extraordinarily fascinating ensemble: it was
in fact possible to enjoy chef Edward Hyltons cuisine, who
would prepare meals which kept in theme with the subject of the
books presented, listen to music chosen by these authors and watch
the showing of videos which harmonized with the atmosphere created.
It all began on 6th July with Pino Cacucci who reached notoriety
when his book Puerto Escondido was made into a film
and who presented Ribelli [Rebels] (published by Feltrinelli).
On 13th July, Carlo Lucarelli, one of the most appreciated
Italian thriller writers, spoke about Un giorno dopo laltro
[One day after another] (Einaudi) and of his experience as a television
presenter in the programme Blu notte. On the 20th July
it was the turn of two local writers: Eraldo Baldini presented
Tre mani nel buio [Three hands in the dark] (Sperling
& Kupfer) and anticipated news regarding the release of Terra
di nessuno [Nobodys land] (Frassinelli), whilst the
very young Alessandro Fabbri illustrated his Mosche
a Hollywood [Flies in Hollywood] (Minimum Fax).
On 27th July Isabella Santacroce, cult writer for many young
people who frequent the Riviera, intervened with a recital of words
and music from Luminal (Feltrinelli) and from Lovers
(Mondadori). On 3rd August there was a huge audience to listen to
Niccolò Ammaniti, one of the best loved contemporary
Italian writers who presented Io non ho paura [I am
not afraid] (Einaudi), who was then awarded the Viareggio Prize.
On 9th August another young man but already a very well known writer,
Giuseppe Culicchia, took the stage with his A spasso
con Anselm [Walking with Anselm] (Garzanti). On 24th August,
after a mid-August break, the public was able to listen to Simona
Vinci and Giampiero Rigosi read their unedited pages,
part of a workpiece still under way. The conclusion was held on
31st August with Sandrone Dazieri, still going strong with
the success of his La cura del Gorilla [Care of the
gorilla] (Einaudi), who entertained those present talking about
his experiences as the editor of the mythical series of the Mondadori
thrillers.
This programme was therefore a very high profile affair and was
always rewarded by a numerous and attentive public.
The Duna degli Orsi has demonstrated how it has literally followed
the slogan it launched this year: not only happy hour
and has once again been avant-garde in the initiatives that the
Ravenna Riviera can offer its guests and residents. And most certainly,
considering the success of this initiative, next summer (or maybe
sooner, who knows?) it will know how to follow up what has been
achieved, giving wide berth to culture as well as fun. In this way
it will prove, or rather confirm, that culture and fun can very
well go hand in hand, in the beautiful, warm evenings of Marinas
beaches.
